Scribit: A Product Review.

Last week I came across a press release explaining the virtues of a new web-based content marketing platform that enables businesses to easily find, publish and share information from sources across the internet. The site is called Scribit (www.scribit.com). It is a simple but very effective means of expanding your website’s content.

Once you have signed up you will need to create a template page on your own website: this is where all the articles you have chosen will sit. The source of information is from a range of high profile providers. All you have to do it filter by the category you are interested in, then tick and post it to your site. You can then link it to your social media platforms. At the moment these are limited to your Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin accounts: it is a pity that Google + is not in the option. Figure 1 and 2 illustrates the output on Twitter and Facebook.

There are a few teething problems: I did have some issues using it on Internet Explorer 8. My other concern is that it is US centric (this is likely to be their initial target market, so you can’t blame them too much here). I had hoped to find up to date stories about the UK’s NHS but there was very little in the way of content.

There is a bigger concern that I think they need to address. Their press release states that they have relationships with a number of top publishers who have provided rights to the content and they have positioned the product as a means of supporting the generation of business: “when you Scribit, you turn sharing into sales”. The terms and conditions state:

You are authorized only to view, copy, print, and use content on this Site so long as the content is used for internal business purposes or for personal, non-commercial or educational use (@ 22nd April 2012)

This contradicts the marketing message and it is likely to confuse potential users. Hopefully they will resolve this in the next few days. Once this is done I would advocate you signing up for a free trial: you will probably need the support of your web agency. I do like the concept and will definitely come back to it once more UK specific information is available and the issues with their terms are resolved.
