Strategic Planet and the University of Huddersfield have teamed up to design a brand new Digital Marketing Degree: BA(Hons) Digital and Social Media Marketing. Its primary aim is to maximise the employability opportunities for each student by giving him/her hands on experience of a range of key platforms and applications. The student also has the opportunity of gaining industrial experience in the third year (the sandwich phase of the course).
In the first year of this digital marketing degree, in addition to learning about Markets and Marketing, Practical Marketing, The Marketing Environment plus Brands and Branding, the student will gain an in depth understanding of Digital Marketing in the Contemporary World. The objective is to build the foundations and understandings of how digital marketing can be applied in a business to business (B2B) and business to consumer (B2C) context. Much of this time will be spent in PC labs, here the student will learn how to use, but more importantly, apply in a business context, a variety of digital marketing tools and platforms. Students are also taught the principles of blogging and are encouraged to start turning themselves into a recognised brand: this will help differentiate them in the very competitive job market.
In the second year of this digital marketing degree, the student will delve into the world of Social Media Marketing and Search Engine Optimisation. Students will also start working in teams to create campaigns for real businesses: they will be given a budget and will have to demonstrate how they can maximise the reach for their given business’ target market. During this period, students will also build on their general marketing and business knowledge through the following modules: Customer Insight, Market Research and Consultancy, Managing and Communicating Brands and The Customer Experience.
Year 3 & 4.
In the third year of this digital marketing degree, the student has the option of gaining a placement for a year. Alternatively, they can embark on the final year, where the focus is on web management and design where they learn how to integrate digital, social and mobile applications into one holistic campaign. They will learn the skills needed to either work ‘client side’ (i.e., a business promoting its own brands), ‘agency side’ (i.e., an organisation that supports business to promote their brands), or go ‘entrepreneurial’ (i.e., start their own venture).
A key differentiator of this course is Dr. Alan Shaw, who will be lecturing on the digital marketing modules, sharing his wealth of experience in delivering digital marketing campaigns across the world.
